World Arthritis Day is marked every year on 12 October. It is a global awareness day about rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, the joint, muscle and bone conditions that Nepali speakers often call **bath rog** (बाथ रोग). Joint pain, swelling or stiffness that keeps coming back deserves a check. For rheumatoid arthritis, the World Health Organization (WHO) says early diagnosis and management can reduce symptoms, slow the disease and prevent disability.

## What is World Arthritis Day, and who supports it?

EULAR, the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology, describes World Arthritis Day as a global awareness day dedicated to increasing understanding of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, and says it supports the day. These diseases comprise more than 200 conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, [Sjögren's disease](/blog/connective-tissue-disorders-sjogren-scleroderma-nepal) and gout (EULAR).

EULAR's campaign theme for 2026 is "Achieve Your Dreams", continuing the 2025 theme. It highlights the changes needed to make those dreams possible, from "earlier diagnosis and better access to treatment" to "greater understanding, inclusion, and support" (EULAR). Themes change, so check EULAR's page for the current one.

## Why does World Arthritis Day matter in Nepal?

In a community survey in Pyuthan municipality published in 2024 (International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases, doi 10.1111/1756-185X.15236), the authors note a lack of community-level studies of musculoskeletal pain. They interviewed 2,145 adults aged 18 and over, and 26.81% (95% CI 24.9 to 28.7) reported past or current musculoskeletal pain or swelling, such as in the joints or muscles. Dr. Krishna Adhikari is one of the study's co-authors.

The limits matter: it covers one municipality, and pain reported in an interview is not a diagnosis of arthritis.

In everyday Nepali these diseases share one word, bath rog (बाथ रोग), so the word alone does not tell you which one it is: see our guide to [bath rog](/blog/bath-rog-arthritis-nepal).

## Which joint signs are worth getting checked?

These are patterns, not a diagnosis, and symptoms vary from person to person (NHS):

- **Morning stiffness that lasts**: in osteoarthritis it usually wears off within 30 minutes of getting up; in rheumatoid arthritis it often lasts longer (NHS, the UK health service). See [inflammation and stiffness in Nepali](/blog/inflammation-stiffness-meaning-in-nepali).

- **Small joints of the hands and feet, often on both sides at once**: typical of [rheumatoid arthritis](/blog/rheumatoid-arthritis-symptoms-treatment-nepal) (NHS), an autoimmune disease (NHS; see [autoimmune diseases in Nepali](/blog/autoimmune-diseases-meaning-in-nepali)).

- **Sudden, severe pain in a joint, usually the big toe**: a main symptom of [gout](/blog/gout-uric-acid-meaning-in-nepali) (NHS). If it comes with a high temperature, see the warning signs below. A high uric acid result does not always mean gout (American College of Rheumatology, ACR).

- **Lower back or hip pain and stiffness, typically worse with rest or inactivity**: the most common symptom of [ankylosing spondylitis](/blog/ankylosing-spondylitis-nepal), which usually starts before age 45 (NIAMS, a US health institute).

- **Painful, swollen joints, sometimes with fever, tiredness or a rash**: can occur in [lupus](/blog/lupus-sle-symptoms-nepal) (NIAMS).

- **Pain that is worse when walking, with stiffness after activity, usually over age 45**: a common pattern of [osteoarthritis](/blog/osteoarthritis-knee-pain-nepal) (NHS).

## Why does early care matter?

For rheumatoid arthritis, WHO says it is not curable and that, untreated, it can severely damage the joints and the tissue around them; if it is diagnosed in time, symptoms and progression can be controlled with treatment. The NHS says early diagnosis and appropriate treatment let many people go months or even years between flares. The ACR adds that a rheumatologist is trained to spot clues that can lead to earlier diagnosis.

## Which doctor should you see for joint pain?

![Illustration of a patient and a doctor talking across a desk](https://media.tulsimultispecialityclinic.com.np/blog/2026-11-04-iz-8bUeYeeKD.webp)

For pain that keeps coming back, the ACR puts the roles this way: an orthopaedic surgeon's role is to perform surgery on bones and joints, while the rheumatologist's role "is to diagnose what type of musculoskeletal disease a person has and to treat it using nonsurgical methods". The first visit covers your history, an examination, earlier results and, if needed, blood tests or scans (ACR): see our guides to [ESR and CRP](/blog/esr-crp-blood-test) and the [RA factor and anti-CCP tests](/blog/ra-factor-anti-ccp-test). No blood test can definitively prove or rule out rheumatoid arthritis (NHS).

## When to see a rheumatologist

Warning signs first. Get medical care the same day (at a hospital emergency department if you cannot see a doctor quickly) if the skin around a painful joint is swollen and hot, or if sore joints come with feeling unwell, a high temperature or feeling hot, cold or shivery (NHS). Sudden, worsening pain and swelling in a joint with a very high temperature or feeling sick could mean an infection inside the joint and needs urgent help (NHS). Go to an emergency department straight away if you have very bad joint pain after a fall or injury, cannot walk or put weight on a joint, the joint has moved out of place, or you have tingling or no feeling around it after an injury (NHS).

See a doctor if joint pain stops you doing normal activities or affects your sleep, if pain or swelling keeps coming back or is getting worse, if it has not improved after treating it at home for 2 weeks, if joints are stiff for more than 30 minutes after waking, or if your child has joint problems (NHS). If you think you have rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, see a doctor: diagnosing it quickly is important, because early treatment can prevent it getting worse and reduce the risk of joint damage (NHS).

Consider a rheumatologist's opinion when pain, swelling or stiffness keeps coming back or does not settle. You do not need to know the disease's name first: naming it is the work of the first visit.
